Weed Control Facts - Winning the Battle of the Weeds

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Michael McGroarty Keeping your landscape plantings, flower beds, and nursery crops free of weeds is a battle, but if you approach it with a strategic plan, you will prevail. In order to develop a plan, you first must understand how weeds work, and what kind of weeds you are dealing with. Basically weeds grow either from seed, or they reproduce from their roots. As the roots grow outward from the parent plant, new plants sprout up from the lateral roots, creating more parent plants and the process continues and the weeds thrive. Weeds that tend to reproduce from the root are usually more difficult to control. Weed control facts? Weeds are plants, and they function just like the desirable plants in your yard. They need water, sunlight, and nutrition to survive. Of these three key survival needs, the easiest one for a gardener to eliminate is sunlight. Through proper mulching you can eliminate the sunlight. But first, lets look at the steps you should go through before you mulch, then well discuss the best mulching techniques to use. In order for your weed control efforts to be truly effective, you should do everything in your power to make your gardens as weed free as possible before you plant or mulch. There are a couple of ways you can go about this, either organically or with chemicals. I dont like using chemicals, but I do use them for weed control, and I use them for pest control when necessary. Ill discuss organic control first. The first thing you should do is remove all unwanted vegetation from your planting area. Using a hoe, spade or other digging device, undercut the roots and remove the undesirable plants, roots and all. Then you should work the soil by rototilling or turning the soil by hand. Once worked, let the soil sit for four days or so, and work it again. Keep doing this over and over as long as time permits. This process serves two purposes. It brings the roots that were left in the soil close to the surface so they can be dried by the sun, which will make them non-viable, and it disturbs the weed seeds that have started to germinate, which makes them non-viable as well. The longer you continue this process the more weeds you are eliminating from your garden. Weed control facts? Depending on the time of the year, there are a few billion weed seeds drifting through the air at any given time, so to think that you can eventually rid a garden of weed seed is false thinking, but at least this process is effective for the remaining roots, which are the most difficult to control. With that process complete, go ahead and plant your garden. When youre done planting you can either mulch the bed, or keep turning the soil on a weekly basis to keep it free of weeds. Most people opt to mulch. Not only does mulch help to control the weeds, but if you select a natural mulch it also adds organic matter to the soil which makes for better gardening results down the road. Before mulching you can spread newspaper (7-9 layers thick) over the soil and place the mulch over top of that. The newspaper will block the sunlight from reaching the surface of the soil and help to keep weed growth to a minimum. The newspaper will eventually decompose, and not permanently alter the make up of your garden. Paper grocery bags also work well, so the next time you hear, Paper or Plastic?, youll know how to answer. What about black plastic, or the weed barrier fabric sold at garden centers? I dont like either and Ill tell you why. For one, neither one of them ever go away, and the make up of your garden is forever altered until you physically remove them, which is a real pain in the butt. Weed control facts? Plastic is no good for the soil because soil needs to breath. Plastic blocks the transfer of water and oxygen, and eventually your soil will suffer, as will your garden. Its all right to use plastic in a vegetable garden as long as you remove it at the end of the season and give the soil a chance to breath. Weed barrier fabrics allow the soil to breath, but what happens is that when you mulch over top of the fabric, which you should because the fabric is ugly, the mulch decomposes and becomes topsoil. Weeds love topsoil, and they will grow like crazy in it. Only problem is, they are growing on top of the fabric, and you are stuck with a ton of problems, like a weedy garden, and a major job of trying to remove the fabric that is now firmly anchored in place because the weeds have rooted through it. Weed fabric is also porous enough that if an area becomes exposed to the sunlight, enough light will peek through and weeds below the fabric will grow, pushing their way through the fabric. I dont like the stuff. Ive removed miles of it from landscapes for other people because it did not work as they had expected. Weed control facts? Controlling weeds with chemicals is fairly easy, and very effective if done properly. I know that many people dont approve of chemical weed controls, but millions of people use them, so I might as well tell you how to get the most effect using them. There are two types of chemical weed controls, post-emergent, and pre-emergent. In a nutshell, a post-emergent herbicide kills weeds that are actively growing. A pre-emergent prevents weed seeds from germinating. Of the post- emergent herbicides there are both selective and non-selective herbicides. A selective herbicide is like the herbicides that are in weed-and-feed type lawn fertilizers. The herbicide will kill broad leaf weeds in your lawn, but it doesnt harm the grass. One of the most popular non-selective herbicides is Round-up, it pretty much kills any plant it touches. Rule number one. Read the labels and follow the safety precautions!!! Round-up is very effective if used properly, but first you must understand how it works. Round-up must be sprayed on the foliage of the plant, where it is absorbed, then translocated to the root system where it then kills the plant. It takes about 72 hours for the translocation process to completely take place, so you dont want to disturb the plant at all for at least 72 hours after it has been sprayed. After 72 hours you can dig, chop, rototill, and pretty much do as you please because the herbicide has been translocated throughout the plant. The manufacture claims that Round-up does not have any residual effect, which means that you can safely plant in an area where Round-up has been used. However, I would not use it in a vegetable garden without researching further. No residual effect also means that Round-up has no effect whatsoever on weed seeds, so there is absolutely no benefit to spraying the soil. Only spray the foliage of the weeds you want to kill. Be careful of over spray drifting to your desirable plants. To prevent spray drift I adjust the nozzle of my sprayer so that the spray droplets are larger and heavier, and less likely to be carried by the wind. I also keep the pressure in the tank lower by only pumping the tank a minimum number of strokes. Just enough to deliver the spray. Buy a sprayer that you can use as a dedicated sprayer for Round-up only. Never use a sprayer that you have used for herbicides for any other purpose. Once you have sprayed the weeds, waited 72 hours and then removed them, you can go ahead and plant. Mulching is recommended as described above. To keep weed seeds from germinating you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Depending on the brand, some of them are applied over top of the mulch, and some are applied to the soil before the mulch is applied. A pre-emergent herbicide creates a vapor barrier at the soil level that stops weed seed germination, and can be very effective at keeping your gardens weed free. They usually only last about 5 or 6 months and need to be re-applied. Visit a full service garden center and seek the advice of a qualified professional to select the pre-emergent herbicide that will best meet your needs. Never use a pre-emergent herbicide in your vegetable garden, and be careful around areas where you intend to sow grass seed. If you spill a little in an area where you intend to plant grass, the grass will not grow. They really do work. Thats what I know about weed control. Read this article several times. Your success depends on getting the sequence of events correct. Michael J. McGroarty is the author of this article. Young People and Cell Phones

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Then]Joseph Then Cell phones are getting very popular with everyone now these days. They are so popular and there are more people getting cell phones, even younger people are getting in on the fun. That is right; it is common for a young person like teenagers to be carrying around cell phones. There is much debate to whether or not it is appropriate for a teenager or youngster to have their own cell phone, to use it, and carry it with them. Some people feel that it is not right for them to have and there are others that feel it is a good thing and feel safer knowing their child has a cell phone with them at all times. You may feel better and safer knowing that your child has a cell phones with them wherever they go. This will give you the security of knowing that you will always be able to get in contact with your child if there is a problem or even if you just want to say hello. If your child gets into trouble, it may be a life saving feature, if they have a cell phone handy to call for help. Times are changing and the world is not as safe as it once was which is one reason many children have such phones. It will make them and you feel a lot safer knowing that they will have a cell phone to call you for help if they ever get into a bad situation. If your child has a cell phone, make sure that they know the when not to use their phone. They should never be using the phone in school. In most schools, if you are using the phone in school, it may be taken from you by the teacher. Once your cell phone is taken from you at school, you may not get it back until the end of the year and parents are stuck paying for that phone even when it is not being used. You should also tell your child to be careful with the minutes. Tell your child you only have a certain amount of time on the phone and explain the cost of the phone to them. If your child knows it is expensive to have a cell phone, they may be a more careful with it and use it less. Make sure they know how important it is to keep it safe and not to loose it or lend it out to anyone or it will be gone. Teachers Pay in the United States

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Lance Winslow One of the most important positions for the forward progression and ongoing stability of a nation is that of a teacher. If we fail to teach the next generation correctly then all we have done in the present period is lost and will disappear in the next. But we must not only teach kids to memorize to get the desired answer, we need to teach them to think, fore there will be critical events in the future some of which we have not properly foreseen, which they will have to figure out for themselves. To insure the future is as bright or brighter than the present day, we must treat our teachers with the respect they deserve for the tasks ahead. Indeed I myself am very concerned with how we treat our teachers in the US. It concerns me that the low pay for such an important endeavor is considered with such a linear approach for what is best for our civilization, children’s future and the ongoing viability of all we are and all we have built; http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?s=d1a48cbf2f3426f37d5b15750820e6d7&showforum=12 http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?s=d1a48cbf2f3426f37d5b15750820e6d7&showforum=13 So if you happen to be a teacher or are in training to become one or aspire to be one, indeed I completely understand where you are coming from on that issue. I wish you success in teaching. You should know how noble the profession is even if you often feel like you are a glorified baby sitter in disguise of the teacher our culture and society really needs. You see the future of our civilization rests on your shoulders. I thank you for your efforts and understand your predicament. Think on this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Belonging to Jesus Christ

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Mellody Davis In the name of Jesus, what shall we do in the time of grief. We do know that the failing of the Louisiana dams must be corrected. I like to know what the world thinks about this so call great country that have people so poor or disable that they cant even afford a bus ticket out of a city that is drowning, and the government wouldnt even make any provision for them to leave. This land so great a free, where were you in our time of need, thats right I forgot you were so greedy. You take our money and line you and your buddies pockets, and then say we dont want or fit the bill for it. We made your country what it is today. We paid for it with force labor, low wages and long sufferings, from wars past and present. Well lets see what the Bible says about this. First look at 2Corinthians 1:3 it says Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any troubles with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation, if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. Look at 2Corinthians 10:7 it says You are looking only on the surface of things. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should consider again we belong to Christ just as much as he. For even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than pulling you down, I will not be ashamed of it. Now look at verse 12 it says We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us, a field that reaches even to you. Now look at Ephesians 1:17 it says I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. Look at 2Timothy 1:8 it says So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy lifenot because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. In closing look at 2Corinthians 4:13 it says It is written: I believed; therefore I have spoken. With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for you benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Elements of a Successful Customer Newsletter - 6 - Headlines

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Simon Payn In a minute, I’m going to give you a way to write great headlines for your newsletter that is as easy as painting by numbers. But first… Several years ago, I worked as an editor on a daily newspaper. I didn’t write the stories, but it was my job to make sure they all appeared on the page — and that as many people were attracted to read them as possible. No page was more important than the front page. And no story on that page was more important than the ’splash’ — the biggest story in the whole paper. So guess which story got the most attention? And guess which part of that story got the most care lavished on it? Of the entire newspaper, the big headline on the front page was given top priority. Why was this? Because the editors knew it was this element of the entire newspaper that was most responsible for daily sales. So the headline had to be the best it could be. But there’s no point in having a headline if all people do is read the headline and move on. The main purpose of any headline in your newsletter is to get the story underneath it read. So here’s a quick checklist for eye-popping headlines: Your headline should indicate the article contains information that is useful to readersYour headline should indicate the article contains information that is interesting to readersYour headline should inform readers about the content of the article but be leave enough unsaid to intrigue readers to read the entire articleYour headline should be an accurate representation of the article — in other words, it shouldn’t mislead people into reading an articleYour headline should (in most circumstances) be in the present tenseYour headline should contain short words rather than long words Take a look at newspaper headlines and magazine cover lines to see some excellent examples. (The editors at Cosmopolitan and The National Enquirer, for example, are masters at headline writing.) Here’s a golden tip you can use to create masterful headlines. Take a headline from a magazine that you think is good and then change it to make it relevant to your article. For example (from Cosmo): 9 Naughty Sex Positions 9 Relaxing Vacation Destinations 9 Summer Gardening Tips Gorgeous Skin — The New Secret Beautiful Walls — The New Paint Secret Healthy Dogs — The New Diet Secret Our Get-It Guide to the 21 Most Glam Jobs Today Our Essential Guide to the 21 Most Useful Household Tips Today Our Mouthwatering Guide to the 21 Best Restaurants in Florence Do it that way, and it’s as easy as painting by numbers. Personalize Your Weight Loss Plan

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Michael Bens The problem with many diet and weight loss plans is that they take a one-size-fits-all approach that simply might not work for everyone. Thats why the same diet that you friend might swear by may not work nearly as well for you. Actually, looking at it logically, this is hardly surprising everyones metabolism and, even more importantly, everyones habits are different. Thats why it makes sense to have a diet and weight loss plan designed specifically for you. This is an idea thats rapidly catching on. Companies such as L.A. Weight Loss and several others are taking on the challenge of designing personal weight loss plans for each of their clients. After all, everyones reasons for being overweight are different. For the most part, being overweight is based on bad habits. Some of us have the habit of eating late at night, while others are addicted to sweets or to fried food. You can try and eliminate the behavior, or course but most often, thats easier said than done. A better approach might be to work around the behavior that is impeding your weight loss. For example, if you are one of those people who just cant go without dessert, you will do better if your weight loss plan includes a daily dose of sweets. There are many low fat, fruit based desserts that you can have without ruining your diet, or if you really crave a decadent dessert, you can cut calories elsewhere or up your exercise to make up for it. You are less likely to cheat and more likely to be successful with your diet if these habits can be integrated in your diet plan and most of the time, they can. Heres another example: weve all heard about how successful the low-carb approach to eating can be for some people. By upping their intake of protein and eliminating all processed carbohydrates such as bread and pasta, many people have had spectacular results. However, if bread and pasta happen to be your favorite foods of all if you were raised with them and cant picture living without them you have little chance of being successful on a low carb diet such as the Zone or Atkins. You would do better, most likely, if you can eat small amounts of the foods you love every day. Finally, there are some people who are overweight because they graze all day long rather than sitting down to regular meals at regular times. This can be one of the most destructive eating habits of all, because it makes it very difficult to measure or keep track of how much food you are actually consuming. If those are your habits, your chances of being successful on any diet plan that restricts you to just three meals a day are quite low. Youll constantly be wanting to snack, and you need a diet plan that allows you to do that. In fact, some dieticians feel that its better to eat many smaller meals a day rather than a few large ones. If you have an organized approach to your snacking, theres no reason why you cant maintain these habits but change the types or amounts of food you eat for maximum weight loss. In short, the personalized approach to dieting and weight loss makes sense because everyone is different, and everyone has different obstacles to overcome. When you buy a diet book, though, chances are that you will learn about a one-size-fits-all type of dieting. If you go to one of the many centers that offers personalized diet plans, however, they will be able to design a plan for you that works with your eating style and habits, rather than against it. Combined with personalized counseling and regular weigh-ins, this approach to dieting has been very successful for many people. Its easier to minimize the harmful elements in our habits than it is to do away with the habits themselves. That having been said, its also important to have an organized, well laid out plan that you can follow. Many weight problems occur precisely because people dont tend to have an organized approach to eating. When your plan is easy to follow and you have access to great advice in a supportive environment, chances are that you will be able to take off that weight! Diet and Weight Control for Children

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By Chris Chenoweth Overweight children need love, support, and encouragement from their parents. An overweight child probably knows better than anyone else that he or she has a weight problem. Focus on the positive qualities of your child. NEVER focus on the weight of your child. Try not to treat your child differently if he or she is overweight. Instead, focus on gradually changing the physical activities and eating habits of your family. Be a good role model for your child. If your child sees you enjoying healthy foods and regular physical activities, he or she is more likely to do the same now and for the rest of his or her life. Realize that an appropriate goal for many overweight children is to maintain their current weight while growing normally in height. They do not necessarily need to lose weight. HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT: *Decreasing calories-in: meaning eat fewer calories, or *Increasing calories-out: meaning burn more calories, or *Ideally, a combination of both. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT GOALS: The first goal of weight management in children and teenagers should be to stop weight gain and maintain normal growth in height. This way they can GROW INTO their weight. To start, have your child eat healthier and begin a program of regular exercise and physical activity. Once your child has stopped gaining weight and is on a regular program of dieting and exercising, you can set further goals of slow weight loss, if necessary. However, do so cautiously. BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION: It is important to modify the behaviors that have caused your child to become overweight and prevent weight loss. Listed below are some helpful tips: TELEVISION/VIDEO GAMES, ETC:You should limit television viewing to about one or two hours each day. Remember, this includes playing video games and using the computer. These pastimes encourage lack of exercise. SNACKS:You should limit snacks to two healthy snacks each day such as raw fruits or vegetables. Avoid using high calorie or high fat foods for snacks, especially chips, cookies, etc. DRINKS:You should encourage your child to drink four to six glasses of water each day, especially before meals. Water has no calories and it will help you to feel full. Other drinks can include diet sodas and lowfat milk. Avoid letting your child drink regular soft drinks or bottled fruit juices, as they are high in calories (150-170 calories per serving). JOURNAL:If you think it helps your child to improve his eating habits, (sometimes it does not) encourage him to keep a weekly journal of food and beverage intake. You should definitely encourage a teenager to keep track of the amount of time he spends watching television, playing video games and exercising. You might also record your child’s weight once a week. FOOD LABELS:It is not necessary to count calories but you and your child should become more educated about the foods you eat and how many calories they contain. You should get into the habit of checking the nutrition label of the foods your family is eating. You want to try and eat foods low in calories and also low in fat. Be careful of many low fat or so-called diet foods as they can be high in calories even though they are low in fat. FOOD SERVING SIZES:Begin checking the serving size of prepared meals and snacks. A bag of chips might only have 200 calories, but the serving size may only be 10 chips. EATING HABITS: HEALTHY MEALS:Your child should eat three well-balanced meals of average size each day. Serve fewer fatty foods. It is best to prepare foods that are baked, broiled or steamed, rather than fried. In addition to a small serving of lean protein, provide large servings of vegetables. SINGLE SERVINGS:Avoid serving seconds of the main course or dessert. You can eat more salad or other vegetables if still hungry. DESSERTS:Serve fresh fruit as a dessert. Avoid frequent eating of ice cream or cake or other high calorie foods. GROCERY SHOPPING:Buy low-calorie and low-fat meals, snacks and deserts, and buy low fat or skim milk and diet drinks. Avoid buying high calorie desserts or snacks such as chips, regular soft drinks or regular ice cream. EAT AT THE TABLE:Avoid letting your child eat meals or snacks outside of the kitchen or dining room. Discourage eating while watching TV. REDUCE FAST FOOD:You should limit how often you allow your children to eat fast food, as it is usually high in fat and calories. EXERCISE SUGGESTIONS: Be physically active. Adults should have at least 30 minutes of exercise most days. Children or teens should have at least 60 minutes each day. Even greater amounts of physical activity may be necessary for the prevention of weight gain, for weight loss, or for sustaining weight loss. Plan family activities that provide everyone with exercise and enjoyment. Provide a safe environment for your children and their friends to play actively. Encourage swimming, biking, skating, ball sports, and other fun activities. HEALTHY EATING SUGGESTIONS: *Follow the dietary guidelines for healthy eating. *Guide the choices for your family rather than dictate foods. *Encourage your child to eat when hungry and to eat slowly. *Eat meals together as a family as often as possible. *Carefully cut down on the amount of fat and calories in the eating plan your family follows. *Do not place your child on a restrictive diet. *Avoid the use of food as a reward. *Avoid withholding food as punishment. *Plan for healthy snacks. Stock the refrigerator with fat-free or low-fat milk, fresh fruit, and vegetables instead of soft drinks or snacks that are high in fat, calories, or added sugars and low in essential nutrients. *Aim to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. *Eating a healthy breakfast is a good way to start the day and may be important in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. IF YOUR CHILD OR TEENAGER IS OVERWEIGHT: The diet for you child should be safe and nutritious. It should include all of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for vitamins, minerals, and protein and contain the foods from the major Food Guide Pyramid groups. Any weight-loss diet should be low in calories ONLY, not in essential nutrients. Even with extremely overweight children, weight loss should be gradual. Crash diets and diet pills can compromise growth and are not recommended by health care professionals. Your child’s physician should supervise any diet program. Weight lost during a diet is frequently regained unless children are motivated to change their eating habits and activity levels for a lifetime. Weight control must be considered a lifelong effort. As a parent, you must work with your children to help them achieve a healthy lifestyle. Helping Your Overweight Child

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Kim Beardsmore With the rise of obesity and the increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes occurring in children, many parents are now faced with helping an overweight child. This may not be a daunting as first seems and here are some simple, but effective steps to take to help your child develop eating habits and active lifestyle that will assist improve their health. Be supportive Tell your child that he or she is loved, is special, and is important. Children’s feelings about themselves often are based on their parents’ feelings about them. Accept your child at any weight. Children will be more likely to accept and feel good about themselves when their parents accept them. Listen to your child’s concerns about his or her weight. Overweight children probably know better than anyone else that they have a weight problem. They need support, understanding, and encouragement from parents. Encourage healthy eating habits Buy and serve more fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned). Let your child choose them at the store. Buy fewer soft drinks and high fat/high calorie snack foods like chips, cookies, and candy. These snacks are OK once in a while, but keep healthy snack foods on hand too and offer them to your child more often. Eat breakfast every day. Skipping breakfast can leave your child hungry, tired, and looking for less healthy foods later in the day. Plan healthy meals and eat together as a family. Eating together at meal times helps children learn to enjoy a variety of foods. Eat fast food less often. When you visit a fast food restaurant, try the healthful options offered. Offer your child water or low-fat milk more often than fruit juice. Fruit juice is a healthy choice but is high in calories. Do not get discouraged if your child will not eat a new food the first time it is served. Some kids will need to have a new food served to them 10 times or more before they will eat it. Try not to use food as a reward when encouraging kids to eat. Promising dessert to a child for eating vegetables, for example, sends the message that vegetables are less valuable than dessert. Kids learn to dislike foods they think are less valuable. Start with small servings and let your child ask for more if he or she is still hungry. It is up to you to provide your child with healthy meals and snacks, but your child should be allowed to choose how much food he or she will eat. Healthy snack foods for your child to try: o Fresh fruit o Fruit canned in juice or light syrup o Small amounts of dried fruits such as raisins, apple rings, or apricots o Fresh vegetables such as baby carrots, cucumber, zucchini, or tomatoes o Reduced fat cheese or a small amount of peanut butter on whole-wheat crackers o Low-fat yogurt with fruit Foods that are small, round, sticky, or hard to chew, such as raisins, whole grapes, hard vegetables, hard chunks of cheese, nuts, seeds, and popcorn can cause choking in children under age 4. You can still prepare some of these foods for young children, for example, by cutting grapes into small pieces and cooking and cutting up vegetables. Always watch your toddler during meals and snacks. Encourage daily physical activity Like adults, kids need daily physical activity. Here are some ways to help your child move every day: Set a good example. If your children see that you are physically active and have fun, they are more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives. Encourage your child to join a sports team or class, such as soccer, dance, basketball, or gymnastics at school or at your local community or recreation center. Be sensitive to your child’s needs. If your child feels uncomfortable participating in activities like sports, help him or her find physical activities that are fun and not embarrassing. Be active together as a family. Assign active chores such as making the beds, washing the car, or vacuuming. Plan active outings such as a trip to the zoo or a walk through a local park. Because his or her body is not ready yet, do not encourage your pre-adolescent child to participate in adult-style physical activity such as long jogs, using an exercise bike or treadmill, or lifting heavy weights. FUN physical activities are best for kids. Kids need a total of about 60 minutes of physical activity a day, but this does not have to be all at one time. Short 10- or even 5-minute bouts of activity throughout the day are just as good. If your children are not used to being active, encourage them to start with what they can do and build up to 60 minutes a day. Kim Beardsmore is a weight loss consultant.
