How a Pressure Washer works

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Samantha Clark Every year homeowners receive a nasty load of dirt, mud, leaves and other debris on the surfaces of their houses sidewalks and driveways. In addition, their automobiles are caked with the results of road salt, mud and oil. The simplest pressure washers just transform an ordinary garden hose into a monster which blasts away dirt, oil and debris. An ordinary pressure washer can put up to 20 times more pressure onto a surface than the garden variety hose. When you are searching for a good choice in a pressure washer, you need to consider water pressure. A pressure washer surface cleaner in a light pressure model will be more effective than a garden hose, but you shouldn’t expect it to do heavy jobs effectively. A typical garden hose will emit 40 pounds per square inch of water pressure, while light duty pressure washers will be rated at around 1300 to 2000 pounds per square inch. A light duty pressure washer surface cleaner is suitable for cleaning cars, awnings and patio furniture. Pressure washers rated at 2000 to 2600 pounds per square inch are great for concrete cleaning, including mild stains, grease and grimes on larger surfaces. Heavy duty pressure washers emit 2700 to 4000 pounds per square inch and work well if you have stubborn grease or stains on concrete, or if you need to remove flakes, dirt and debris from surfaces in preparation for painting or sealing. Electric pressure washers Electric pressure washers are made in all three levels of pounds per square inch–light duty, medium duty and heavy duty. Ratings by one of the major online sellers of pressure washer parts, pressure washer pumps and pressure washer equipment don’t show a preference between an electric pressure washer and a gas pressure washer. The ratings distinguish only good, better and best within size categories. An electric pressure washer can be found to do any of the residential jobs which the average homeowner is likely to need. The disadvantage of the electric pressure washer if any is the problem of electrical outlets available to the job which needs to be completed. Gas pressure washers Gas pressure washers are more portable, but they are also noisier and may emit more noxious fumes while operating. There is also the inconvenience of having to store gasoline fuel when the equipment is needed. These pressure washers also are available in light, medium and heavy duty models, as well as an even heavier and more powerful contractors’ model. Honda pressure washers rate high among the gas pressure washers, with better and best ratings for both mid-sized and large sized capacity washers and Honda pressure washers captured all three categories in the contractor’s model. A Ryobi pressure washer is another favorite of residential users. It’s heavy duty range (3000 pounds per square inch is quite affordable) and will do most jobs with a vengeance. The Ryobi pressure washer is available at Home Depot stores, which is another plus factor in its favor. Hot water pressure washer Another even more exciting innovation in pressure washers is the new hot water pressure washer. This tool would be perfect for those really difficult jobs where nothing else will cut through the dirt. Heated pressure washers are more difficult to find, but Honda makes portable oil-fired hot water pressure washers at the high capacity end of the scale. Mi-T-M makes electrically heated hot water pressure washers, also at the high end of the capacity scale. Whichever type of residential pressure system you choose, you should be sure that the merchant also carries a full line of pressure washer parts and pressure washer pumps. It can be really frustrating to be in the middle of spring or fall cleaning and have to wait for replacement of a part or a pump. Low Carb Recipes - Surprisingly Doable

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Trevor Mulholland The low carb diet movement has taken the world by storm. Nearly everyone has heard of it who could avoid doing so? Variations of this reducing diet have been endorsed by celebrities and other popular figures. Advertisements for low carb food products and low carb recipes have been portrayed prominently in magazines and television, with the promise that you WILL lose weight even if you eat large food portions; you just have to make sure that the food you are eating has little or no carbohydrate content. Perhaps one of the most surprising things is that low carb recipes are doable and once your system has gotten used to them, they are easy to follow. People are of the apprehension that it will be hard to make dishes because of the scarcity of ingredients. After all, we have become accustomed to using things like sugar, flour, bread, potatoes, etc. all of which are a no-no for low carb dieters in the dishes we eat. But as the low carb diet movement started to become more popular and as the clamor for appropriate ingredients increased, the food industry rose up to the occasion and started introducing products to meet demand. Take for instance, sugar. Normal sugar is known to trigger certain mechanisms in the body that would make a person feel hungrier more often. Add this to the fact that sugar is full of empty calories that will only add to the ones that your body already is trying to burn. Now, however, dieters can take comfort in the fact that they can use artificial sweeteners such as Splenda that do not have the same effect on the body as sugar, but still impart the sweetness that so many of us want and crave. Entrees or main dishes pose no problem since low carb diets usually promote the consumption of high-protein food products, such as meat. It is those appetizers, desserts, snack foods and even beverages that pose a problem. But with the introduction of substitute products, a dieter need not look at dishes like breaded chicken or chocolate cake with vain longing. Just look at the variety of low carb recipes online and offline, and you will see that there is a plethora of ingredients with the label low carb attached to them. Want to make some brownies? No problem, just use low carb chocolate. Breaded pork chops or chicken can be enjoyed guilt-free if you use bread crumbs derived from low carb bread. Are you a pasta lover who cringes at the thought of having to give up lasagna and spaghetti? Then you will appreciate the fact that there are low carb pastas out on the market, enabling you to continue enjoying your favorite dishes just make sure that the sauces and other ingredients you use are not laden with carbohydrates. Low carb reducing diets, such as Atkins and South Beach, do not ask the dieter to totally give up food items that have carbohydrate content. The key is to control ones carb intake in order to promote faster metabolism: burn more calories faster to lose weight faster. Fruits and vegetables are still an essential part of the diet, but it is important to know which types of fruits to avoid and to enjoy, especially if you are just starting your diet. For instance, you can enjoy grapefruit, peach or strawberry shakes, smoothies or juices without compunction; the same cannot be said for dishes that contain bananas, pears, or grapes. If you find yourself running out of recipe ideas and you are determined to stick with a low carb diet plan, there are numerous books, web sites, and other resources that you can avail of in order to plan a daily or weekly menu. This is assuming that you like to cook for yourself or someone else on a low carb menu. On the other hand, if you are not the type who is fastidious about home cooking, then you will be glad to know that many restaurants serve food especially for the low carb consumer. There is also a variety of microwaveable and ready-to-eat meals that are suited for such reducing diets. Before a person goes all out on a carbohydrate-controlled diet and starts hoarding and following low carb recipes, it is always a wise thing to get a professional medical opinion on whether such a diet is safe for him or her. Persons with certain health issues, such as kidney disease, should not embark on a low carb reducing diet. Barring that, almost any person can enjoy great-tasting even gourmet foods and drinks and still lose weight in the process. Carb-club.com provides you with information on all kinds of low carb recipes and diets like the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, the Zone diet, and more. Channel Your Inner Rage - We All Get Angry Sometimes - Learn How To Benefit From It

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Renee Feldman The massacre that occurred at Virginia Tech University that will go down as the most tragic and worst in US history. His was an extreme case of anger and violence that was pathological and untreated. We all get angry and frustrated from time to time. You know this first hand if you commute to work in a high traffic area. What many people dont know is that anger can be a useful and motivating emotion when channeled properly. Here are some ways that you can identify your anger, take control of it and charge forward in your life. Before you can use anger to your advantage, you need to acknowledge that you have it. You may be sitting there reading this thinking that you cant remember the last time you got angry. This simply cant be true unless you live in a monastery or actively and consistently practice meditation and prayer that keeps you in a constantly blissful state. There are people like this but they are remarkably rare and have usually chosen to isolate themselves from society. If you really dont think you have any anger, then its possible that you have stifled it and it has turned into depression for you. Lets assume that you can see this potentially motivating emotion and learn what to do with it. Start by looking at what and who you are angry at. If there is a situation where your anger is justified and valid, it may be helpful if you can constructively confront this situation. Dont do it while you are actually feeling the emotion. Wait until you are calm and write down what you can do or say so that you can assert yourself in a constructive way. If you are speaking to a person, try to evoke empathy by using the terms me and I feel in a way that doesnt blame the other person. Or, think of a story to use as an analogy so the person can see your side of things. If a confrontation scenario is not possible, then you are going to have to deal with your anger in a more constructive way. Anger is an emotion that carries lots of energy with it. If it was a color, it would be red. In astrology, the planet Mars represents among other things, anger. It is a warrior planet. A very practical way for you to channel your angry energy is to use it in a physical activity. Most people need to exercise more, and using your anger to get you moving, whether you run, kick box or participate in a martial art is a great way to re-direct your emotions. If this isnt your style, you may want to try an inward approach like meditation. Meditation is not as mystical or mysterious as it sounds. It mostly involves calming down your mental activity in order to invoke a sense of peace and relaxation. There are various breathing techniques and methods that can help you to reach this state. Once you get into this type of brain wave pattern, you can let go of things that are bothering you and make space for better things in your life. Channeling anger can make your life more peaceful and purposeful. Causes of Dark Eyes Circles

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Evie Lampard People think that having dark circles under the eyes is a lovely sign of aging. But is not completely true as you can see children and youngs with the same problem. Many specialists claim that dark eye circles are hereditary. Of course they are, but we can see people with no sign under the eyes too. In my opinion, we must understand dark eye circles heredity in this way: once I get dark eye circles, I’ll let this predisposition to all my descendents. If you accept my point of view, you should take care of your dark circles, unless the opinion of your descendents is not important to you. To avoid dark eye circles must to understand their causes first. 1. Insufficient rest causes under eye circles. As the day wears on, there is increased circulation around the eye, resulting in worsening eye circles. By insufficient rest you should understand situations like not having enough sleep, working to much on computer, watching TV and so on. 2. Under eye circles are often sign of skin dehydration. 3. The area directly under the eyes are related to kidneys, so the presence of dark circles indicate weakness or problem in the kidney or liver areas and should be an invitation to see your doctor. 4. Perhaps you have allergies. Common allergy causing foods are, dairy products, white potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco, wheat products, corn products, and chocolate. 5. You might have some delicate conditions such as iron absorption deficiency, sinus or anemia problems. Finding the right cause of your dark circles gives you the possibility to apply the right treatment to fight them Evie is a freelance writer interested in items such as hylexin and dark eye circles. Discover Yoga’s Healing Power

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Nick Jakotic There are several medical conditions that can be improved by practicing yoga. It can be used to lessen the negative effects of infertility, lung disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, cancer, high blood pressure, and joint pain. The beneficial effects of yoga practices are well recognized not only by the yoga community but also by medical doctors. One of the main elements that lead to an illness is stress. Being responsible for a huge number of sicknesses, this item, which we develop in our minds, can be reduced through a good usage of yoga techniques. Here are just some of the problems that are related to an over active stress response: depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, some types of diabetes mellitus, cardio-vascular disease, several autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, reproductive problems, and an aggravated suppression of the immune system. The response of the sympathetic nervous system can trigger stress in our metabolism. The reaction to various outside stimuli is also known as the fight or flight response the mind and body, faced with an endangering or disturbing element, prepare for one of the two options. Physically, this is manifested through an instantaneous heart rate increase, together with a high ascent of blood pressure. Breathing gets shallow and the muscles tense in anticipation to the following action. Internally, this response reduces the blood flow to internal organs and processes that are not essential in that particular moment (such as digestion and elimination) are shut down. This state of increased awareness and readiness is beneficial on a short term, preparing our body to react to the outside interventions and stimuli. Both in a fight and in a flight situation, the body is physically and mentally prepared to act. The problem arises when long-term exposure to similar stress takes place. This fight or flight response is only meant to help on short periods of time the longer it is activated the less resources will the body have to function normally. There is a natural countermeasure for the fight or flight response. It is called the parasympathetic nervous system or the relaxation response. It is automatically activated when the elements that caused the stress are gone but it is also possible to increase its effects by breathing deeply and relaxing your muscles. By increasing the length of this process we allow our body to recover faster, enabling it to eliminate the harmful effects of stress in a prompt and efficient manner. Yoga highlights the idea that by using breathing and relaxation techniques you can reduce the harmful effects of stress factors on your body. A lessened fight or flight response can also be achieved by looking at adverse factors as challenges rather than threats. This approach allows your mind to focus on finding a solution, rather than creating an abrupt response. Another concept employed by this technique is that of acting versus reacting, of taking initiative versus responding to outside factors. The positive effects of yoga during a healing process are undeniable. However, these techniques should only be used as a form of support and the healing shouldnt rely solely on them. The best results are achieved by combining yoga with traditional and modern medicine and by addressing a problem both from a mental and physical point of view. Cut the Honeymoon Short

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Mary Jensen Generally, a lot of focus is put on the honeymoon. But have you ever considered the benefits of cutting it short? When my husband and I got married, he was getting over a throat infection. It was the middle of winter and we had planned to stay at a lodge for a few days. We ended up canceling our plans, not wanting to be that far away from a clinic if the infection came back. We still stayed at a themed inn for our wedding night, but went right to our apartment the next day. Both of us had two weeks off before going back to work. In the end, we were glad to have that time before getting back to the real world. I’m not suggesting you cancel your honeymoon. Simply come home a few days early, or give yourself a few extra days of time off. The transition time will be a starting block to your marriage. This was our experience: Everyone still thought we were gone. We were able to lock ourselves in the apartment with no interruptions. If I remember right, we didn’t even have the phone working until after a few days. We had plenty of time to open all of our presents and write thank you notes. The apartment got organized. Everything had a place. The majority of our things got unpacked. Anything left in a box after we went back to work was still there three months later. I can only imagine how little would have been unpacked if we only had a few days. The money that would have gone toward the honeymoon went straight into savings. That cushion was greatly appreciated when we both lost our jobs sixth months later. It was a time to adjust to really living together. Not in a romantic getaway, but dealing with the realities of shopping, sharing a small bathroom, fixing dinner, etc. We were able to set up a routine so we didn’t get thrown off when we got back to the reality of the work day. We learned how to cooperate and compromise. All of this would have been harder to do if we had immediately thrown ourselves back into our old schedules. I would urge all engaged couples to schedule that extra time. If you even come home one day early, you still save money and have some sort of adjustment period. It’s not worth it to come home from the honeymoon and go straight back to working and socializing. Give yourself that time. You’ll be glad you did. Bed Prep-Planting For The Future

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Todd Wessel As a professional, when I get hired for an installation of a new landscape, I want the environment the plants are being installed into to be in the best possible condition. A good soil mix of compost, topsoil and a little sand would be perfect. This will aid in the water and nutrient holding capacity of the soil, faster and easier root development into the surrounding soils and drainage, by allowing water to move away from the plants. Oh yea, and one more important thing. The prep makes for very, very easy digging. When you can install a new landscape into these conditions, you’re beginning the process for a long and successful landscape. Our reputations are built from the ground up Our reputations as professionals are built on our past performances. When you take time to prep your planting beds, you guarantee success to your clients and to your professional career. Happy clients and healthy gardens speak volumes to everyone. I recommend these processes to all of our clients, trying to drive home the point that doing things right in the beginning, will result in a healthier and brighter future. Nine times out of ten though, it comes down to the almighty dollar and the soil prep is the one thing that usually gets discarded as not necessary. Clients would rather have the bigger plants, heck; we can worry about the soil later. Big mistake. Amending the Soil If you can afford to amend the soil in your garden, do so. This is the most important thing you can do to guarantee the future health of your garden. When you amend your soil before planting your landscape, you will be rewarded with; Read this and then read again. I know I already said it once, but this is so important; Better water and nutrient holding capacity in your soil(more efficient fertilizer usage and watering time for you), faster root development into surrounding soils ( plants will establish themselves faster, grow healthier with less effort from you) and help with better drainage by allowing water to drain away from the plants. When soils stay wet, plants struggle and die. Most soils in our area have a descent amount of clay in them. Clay soils will hold onto water, draining very slowly. Soil that drains slow stays wet longer. When soils stay wet, plants die. AMEND YOUR SOIL! Amend your soil like this If you have a heavy clay soil, spread 3″ of compost on top of your beds and till to a depth of 12″. This should help tremendously. The compost will help loosen the soil, creating more space for oxygen and helping with drainage. A heavy duty rear tine tiller from a rental shop will do a great job. Let the machine do the work for you. This size tiller should have very little problem getting thru any soil. If you have a sandy soil, water runs right thru. Use a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost and cover beds to a 3″ depth then till. Follow the same steps as above. The topsoil and compost mixture will help with the water and fertilizer holding capacity of your soil, allowing more to stay around the root zone longer. Figuring out material To figure out how many yards of compost you need(measure the length x width of your garden) to get square feet–>example 20 feet long x 10 feet wide= 200 square feet—- now you want to figure out how deep you want to put the compost. We said 3″ of compost on top of the soil before we till— take 3″ divide by 12″ to get the factor to multiply with the square footage of bed space. 3/12=.25— 200x.25=50.00— now divide 50/27 which is the cube factor—-50/27=1.85 cubic yards of compost. Order 2 yards. Practice with different depths of compost till you get good at the calculations. When the prep is complete, make sure to grade the soil away form any buildings to allow for proper drainage. I dont think I need to amend my soil If you can’t afford to amend your soil, dont worry, most plants will survive (survive not flourish) in the poorest of soils, as long as the soil doesnt stay wet all the time. Wet soils limit oxygen to the roots and most plants end up suffocating and dying. When you dig in wet soil, it has a fool odor and makes a sucking sound when you pull out the shovel. Amend this with compost or change the plans Plants installed into soil that is not amended, will survive and grow, but nowhere near as fast or healthy as in soils that were amended. Root systems will struggle to expand into hard clay soil and dry out faster from lack of water in sandy soil. Fertilizer will get held up in wet clay soil, never getting to the roots, or flow right by in the sandy soil because there is no holding capacity. You have two choices. Amend the soil before you plant and reap the rewards of doing things right or plant into the existing soil and baby-sit your landscape as it struggles to mature. Want to Build a Pond?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Robert Dorrance A pond, logically, the first question you should ask is WHERE? Do you have a huge yard with a lot of trees and shrubs and flowerbeds? In other words what is the present landscape like? Would you prefer your pond in a sunny spot or in the shade? That may not seem too important, but if you should decide to surround your pond with flowers, it becomes very important. It seems (to me at least) that there are many more varieties of flowers that are sun lovers rather than ones that prefer shade. Another consideration also is that if you place your pond too near to trees, then falling leaves become a cleanup problem. Once youve decided on a location, then the next question is HOW BIG? Do you want a small pond that will only need a few hundred gallons to fill, or something more like what you see in the pictures that accompany this text that holds around three thousand gallons? Do you have a water spigot close enough to your pond location so that you dont need three hundred feet of hose to fill it? If you are going to have a pond with a pump and filter to re-circulate the water, then you will need an electrical source nearby. Are you thinking of having a water fall or fountain? Do you think that you are going to want fish or other aquatic life in your pond? Will you need a fence? Does your city or township require fences or any other kind of safeguards around ponds? If there are no local ordinances in this regard, then how about your own personal feelings about keeping such an area safe for small children, who all seem to love water and gravitate to it like bees to honey? Where is the one really good spot in your yard where you love to sit and commune with nature? If you have a spot like that, then that is probably the perfect place for your pond. Just sitting and watching a waterfall or fountain is very relaxing, and if youve decided to liven up your private little lake, then choose fish like Koi, Comets, and Shabunkins which seem to be quite hardy specimens. They winter well, even here in northern Ohio. We havent lost one fish to the weather in the eight years weve had our pond. Now, as to the basic hardware needs. Set your mind to having a strong liner, even if its more expensive. This is the key to a trouble free pond. Firestone makes a liner material called EPDM PondGuard that is tough and very puncture resistant. (Holes in the liner are a real pain in the neck!). Besides the liner, youll need a submersible water pump, a pond filter, a UV light (sometimes called a UV filter), and a few pond plants. Just some things to think about before you build your pond. Robert Dorrance has had a pond for the last eight years and would like to share his experiences with you. Be sure to come by and download the free e-book, How To Build A Beautiful Backyard Pond. Fun Science Facts - Great Science Projects!

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Mort Barish You may not believe it, but every one of these facts is true. Fun science facts are fascinating and, with a little imagination, make great science fair projects. If you are a kid, do you know that you have 94 more bones in your body than your parents. You have 300 bones in your body. Your parents each have only 206 bones. As children grow older, some of their bones fuse together. How about this idea for a science fair project? How many bones do other animals have? Do young animals have more bones than adult animals of the same species? You will never guess which animal is the most dangerous in the world. It’s the common housefly. Because of their habit of dropping waste, they transmit more disease than any other animal. What other sources of disease transmission can you think of for a winning science fair project idea? If you are a six foot adult and you could jump as high as a flea, you would jump over a 90 story building. Fleas can jump 130 times their own height. An adult with the same athletic prowess could jump 780 feet. You could do a science experiment about other bugs and animals and how high they can jump, and then submit it as your next science fair project. What do you have in your body that measures 60,000 miles? The blood vessels in the average body measure about 60,000 miles. This could be a winning science fair project idea. Do some research and find out how many miles of blood vessels there are in several different animals. My what big eyes you have. Do you know who or what has the biggest eyes on the planet? Finding out just who or what could make an exciting science fair project. It’s the giant squid with eyes that measure 15 inches wide. Just how far can the sound of an animal be heard. One hundred yards? One mile? How about 500 miles? That’s how far the low frequency sound of a humpback whale can be heard. Find out how far other animal sounds can be heard and see if you can come up with an award winning science fair project. Did you know — the universe contains over 100 billion galaxies; more germs are transferred shaking hands than kissing; giraffes never lie down. All great science facts that would make great science fair projects! Mort Barish is co-founder of Terimore Institute Inc. Terimore Institute provides science fair projects for children in grades K-12 to help them successfully compete in science fairs.
